To do by next week
📥 1. Prepare summary paragraph for Bren website
Due when? Submit by Friday 1/16.
How to submit: Add to Capstone Summaries. Your advisor must review your summary before submitting it.
See week 1 class slides for details about how to prepare your summary.
🤝 2. Submit Team Management Plan draft
Due when? Submit by next class Tuesday 1/20.
How to submit: Add document to the Team Management Plan draft shared folder.
Instructions
- Finish drafting the DIP Team Management Plan section using the Team Management Plan template.
Consider the following resources when writing the Team Management Plan:
- MEDS Capstone Project Guidelines
- Team’s project roles and responsibilities
- Ten simple rules to cultivate belonging in collaborative data science research teams
- Communication roles activity form last week
- Dr. Allison Horst’s Code of Conduct
Additionally, check your “Expectations between students and advisor” section in Team Management Plan with your advisor. You can add this as a discussion item to the agenda for your next meeting with your advisor or email them asking for their feedback. If you are not sure how to bring this up try something like:
“Our Team Management Plan must include a section about expectations between students and faculty advisor. We have included some of these expectations and would like to discuss them with you. We also want to integrate expectations you have about how our team will conduct its work in this project.”
If you have already checked these expectations with your advisor, great! You’re done.
📝 3. Draft summary, objectives, and deliverables DIP sections
Due when? Submit by next class Tuesday 1/20.
How to submit: Add this document to the DIP drafts shared folder. This document will be used to draft all sections of the DIP except the Team Management Plan.
Instructions
Draft the following sections of the DIP (they should be short!):
- Summary
- Objectives
- Deliverables
You can see more details about how to structure these sections on ths week’s class slides and the Capstone Guidelines.
Remember:
- your team is responsible for reaching out to your client or advisor with any questions needed to clarify these sections
- as needed, you can seek feedback from your advisor on your DIP sections before submitting a complete first draft on Friday 2/6.
📑 4. Prepare for data management meeting with Research Data Services
Due when? Submit before next class Tuesday 1/20.
How to submit: Add your answered questionnaire to the “RDS meeting questionnaire” shared folder.
Instructions
Next week, each team will meet independently with the Research Data Services (RDS) team from the UCSB Library to help you plan your Data Management Plan. Complete the following tasks in preparation for this meeting:
- Read the Data Management Plan section of the MEDS Capstone Project Guidelines (1 page)
- Answer this questionnaire prepared by RDS. This is an informal document, short answers are ok. If a question is not relevant you can skip it or write a short explanation why this does not apply.
- Come prepared with questions about data management and archival for your project.
